MARAMANIA SANDRA

SUPER HUBBY: Pete Manning supports Sandra and makes sure she doesn't collapse with the nerves

Despite suffering from an acute dose of maramania, Stablemate Sandra Manning gave her 3:18:31 marathon PB a 10-minute walloping at Sunday’s Dublin marathon—she finished in 3:08.

Bag of nerves Manning, spent the week before the marathon suffering a severe case of taper madness. The Stable News managed to get hold of private email correspondence between Manning and the world-famous coach, Coach Stazza, which clearly shows that taper madness is real…

Hi John,

Nearly there now!

What pace will I do my 20 x 1 minute on Wednesday?

I was half thinking of going here on Thursday – do you rate the recovery lab places?

Any tips on what I need to be doing for the next two weeks?

Thanks,

Sandra

Hi Sandra

Waste of time and money, Sandra. As the mileage settles and we cut back on the workouts, you’ll feel better.

20×1 minute is done at 5k effort off jog rec. Don’t hammer them, the idea is control and rhythm. Pace isn’t that important. It’s more about sharpening up.
Tips: plenty of sleep, keep on top of nutrition, and don’t do anything differently to normal. The work’s done. Just enjoy it. relax. 🙂

Great thanks, pretty nervous now I have to say – haven’t ran a marathon since March 2015!

Re physio, had a session today – he said calves are like lead so did a good bit of work on them. Is a physio session next week too close to the race? Today should have flushed out a good bit of stuff in the legs – my 6 mile run later is going to be a riot!

Yeah, you don’t need to go back to the physio (waste of time), as the taper will sort everything. Just keep it all sensible and normal. I’ll chat with you early next week and we’ll go through everything.

Hi John,

Sorry I’m late – left laptop in work so had nothing to send it in on last night.

Having a little panic – everyone keeps asking me do  I feel like I’m floating when I’m running yet with my taper – I do not feel like I’m floating at all. My legs felt pretty sluggish on Saturday morning with my last MP run out. I”m basically building this marathon up in my head to be way worse in my head, I just need a plan.

Haha. Chill. You’ll be fine. We’ll sort out a call and go over the plan. For now, just focus on the basics: sleep, nutrition, and no risks.

I’ll be in touch…

Hey John

Got a call from doctor half hour ago with my blood test results I had done 2 weeks ago. Iron levels at 18 which is low. Presume I shouldn’t go taking anything until after Sunday. I was taking iron ages ago but stopped as thought I was grand again but looks like I need to go back on a supplement again. Also presume this won’t interfere with my race.

Morning! It’s like the placebo effect here today. My doctor asked me last night was I feeling tired and I have not been feeling tired at all. This morning now I think I’m wrecked. Shouldn’t have answered his call last night!!!

Re my run today – it’s lashing here today was tempted to go into my gym at lunch and run on treadmill but then was thinking it might not be good on my legs to do that and I just need to suck it up and stop being a baby and go out in the rain yes?

Prepare for more of these crazy emails as the maranoia builds!!

On a serious note though this whole low iron thing won’t hinder my performance on Sunday sure it won’t? Having a mini meltdown over this. Like I wouldn’t have even known if he hadn’t rang. Queue to send a virtual slap to cop on….

You’ll be ok as you’ve been running well with it. What it means is that when your iron picks up, it will help your running. But you’ll be fine as you’ve been ok so far.

Great I’m not longer tired ….Damian going to give me a slap at lunch!

Despite Manning’s madness, she still managed to run a 10-minute PB, executing the plan to perfection—she ran 2 minutes faster than her A++ goal.

Mad Manning was the toast of social media with Facebook and Strava followers banging on the praise.

Fellow Stablemate, Jason Cisney posted on Strava: “Wow good job! Nice negative splits.”

Fellow Stablemate, Kurt Olsen posted: “Wow! You killed it! Excellent job, especially with a huge PR!”

Overjoyed Manning posted on Facebook: “Done and dusted. 10-minute PB. I’m still in shock. What an atmosphere and the support around Dublin was just unreal. Big thanks to Peter Manning for being my rock of support last few months and holding the Fort on early Sunday mornings!! Thanks, John Starrett for getting me in good shape in a short space of time, wouldn’t have got near that time without ya!! Special shout out to my club mate Aoife Cooke for winning the national championship. Well done to all Eagle AC smashing times today. Emotional rant over.”
