Hanging in despite everything!

What talent would you like to have?

To play a musical instrument well.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Bringing up four kids.

Who are your heroes in history?

People who fought for the dispossessed and impoverished masses.

Who are your heroes in real life?

People who fight for the dispossessed and impoverished, especially those in developing countries.

What is your idea of happiness?

Having a celebratory drink with my kids after we’ve watched Everton beat Liverpool and before catching a flight to Kathmandu.

Where would you most like to live?

I would like to split my time between Galway, Liverpool, and travel.

What profession would you like to attempt?

Psychotherapist (on the basis that professional footballer might not be possible at my age).

What is your greatest extravagance?

Long-distance travel.

What is your most treasured possession?

Photographs of my family and my travels in Asia.

When did you start running?

Five years ago.

What does running mean to you now?

Since retiring, running provides some regular structure to my days. I treat it as a form of physical meditation.

John’s experience, personal interest, and encouragement, and the sense of camaraderie between the runners.
